As 2019 is upon us, we reflect back on a busy 2018. HALO had an exciting year with the introduction of the twin-engine BK117 Helicopter. We are thankful to Rangeland Helicopters for believing and supporting our vision.
We are extremely grateful for the outpouring of financial support from organizations and individuals in our area, from Saskatchewan to Waterton. We are also blessed to have a great group of volunteers, Pilots, and Executive Directors.
Southern Alberta and SW Saskatchewan should pat themselves on the back for stepping up and creating fundraisers or taking time and effort to support the ones out there that are making sure peoples lives are saved. What was interesting was the number of companies now using Halo's reach for advertising. Since we are in the face of so many people, we are a great place to advertise.
The benefits of the BK were realized very quickly. We had a number of successful missions to Foothills Hospital and Calgary Children’s Hospital along with Medicine Hat Hospital. We were able to get patients to Calgary from the scene quickly, without refueling. The BK was involved in two search and rescue missions. With the increased capabilities and service levels of the BK, come increased costs, approximately 3 times more than our previous costs with the 206 Helicopter.
The benefits of the BK are:
- We can land on all hospital heliports
- Efficient patient loading system with a full-size stretcher
- More room for ALS (advanced life saving) Paramedics to work on the patient
- We can carry two Paramedics
- More range and quicker than the 206 Helicopter
-Adds an element of safety that is demanded of this industry
Thankfully, near years end, we received a one year grant from Alberta Health Services, which will cover approximately 40 percent of our projected costs. Even with the grant, fundraising will still need to remain a high priority in order to cover the increased operating costs.
If you are interested in sponsoring a decal on the BK, a legacy donation, an annual recurring donation, or a customized donation, please call our office at 403-528-9088.
